This past Saturday, I spent the day teaching songwriting at Prestonwood Baptist Church, in Plano, TX. The church has a newly formed songwriter’s group – the brainchild of an old friend (and writing partner), Chris Machen. Chris has gathered together some 15+ writers who are all helping one another to grow in the craft of songwriting. Some of the writers are absolute beginners. Others are truly experienced writers. But everybody had a great attitude and a genuine desire to learn. For close to 8 hours, we talked about the craft of songwriting and listened to one another’s songs. My primary advice to this group (and any new writer) was: work to improve your writing skills so your next song will always be better than your last song.
I gotta say thanks to all the writers that attended. But special thanks to Chris and his wonderful wife, Diane, for hosting me and seeing to it that I got to eat real Tex-Mex and real Texas Barbecue while I was there. Reminded me just how much I miss Texas sometimes!
